TEXT (1 John 1:8)
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. NIV
If we claim that we're free of sin, we're only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. Message
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ESV
COMMENTARY
Neo-Phariseism is the term used for those of us who have come to believe that we are now so holy, so good, on such good terms with God that when we approach the throne of grace seraph and cherub have to step aside. We believe that we have done so well in our ‘spiritual’ advance that there is nothing broken, nothing missing and nothing is out of place.
To say that we are without sin is to say that the work of sanctification has already been complete in us, or worse, that we never needed such a work. To say that we have no sin means that we have no further need of Jesus’ redemptive or cleansing intervention in our lives.
John’s language is defining for those who hold this view – we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us! Our closeness to God makes us see the purity of the radiance of the glory of God and it is that same radiance of His glory which makes us realise how underserving and how utterly sinful we really are.
Something to Meditate on:
God’s light does not embarrass me, but rather humbles me.
A decision I need to make
Which part of my Christian life makes me feel that I do not need God’s attention there?
