HEADING
Now!

By Teddy A Jones

TEXT (Col. 3: 8-9)

so make sure it's all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity, dirty talk. Don't lie to one another. You're done with that old life. It's like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you've stripped off and put in the fire. [MSG]

8But now put away and rid yourselves [completely] of all these things: anger, rage, bad feeling toward others, curses and slander, and foulmouthed abuse and shameful utterances from your lips! 9Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old (unregenerate) self with its evil practices, [AMP]

But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. 9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. [NLT]

COMMENTARY

“Hard work is often the easy work you do not do at the proper time”- Campus Life, May 1980.

Procrastination is my sin
It brings me naught but sorrow.
I know that I should stop it
In fact, I will...tomorrow – Gloria Pitzer
Imagine a doctor lukewarm disease. Imagine a fireman nonchalant about the burning building next door. Imagine a man coming from the field after a long day of manual labour in the sun and sitting down in the living room to watch the news then going to bed in the same clothes. Imagine a teenager coming from football practice on a raining afternoon and going to bed in the same clothes.

In this text we find this image of soiled, dirty clothes. That kind of clothes is not the kind that one usually delays in putting off is it? He uses an imperative form of the verb. Put off! Get rid of! Often we are guilty of the sin of gradualism, addressing gradually what needs decisive and swift action. Delaying what needs to be done now! How long is now? Now has been defined as 0-5 seconds, the time it takes for our senses to detect a signal, process it, take action if necessary and store that signal into the unconscious part of the brain. The old man, the old way of life, the former things, contrary to life where Christ is raised must be put away NOW!

Something to Meditate on:

What soiled garment have I been sleeping in?

A decision I need to make

Write down all that needs to be stripped off now!
